See there was the Model Expo not too far away, and I had seriously planned on going over and hopefully meeting some new girls. But then I went to the website and after 45 minutes of searching, I STILL couldn't find the admission charge.

So I decided to pass on it... Instead I went to the big newsstands and browsed a bit.

So here's the latest what's on the newstand that's interesting report. Remember all the previous caveats? Well, they still apply... go look up the previous report if you've forgotten them.

Italian Vogue, September issue. I know there are a lot of people who really got turned on by the Sin City image style. Guess what, Vogue's got a bunch of pages shot by Jay Meisel in that style. Interesting. Also some Peter Lindbergh stuff. But the cover price is $19.95 this month. What's with this variable price on the cover business? Anyway, I looked and put back...

POP, Issue 11, Autumn/Winter. POP, fashion for fashion's sake... they claim. I like this somewhat pricey ($15.00) UK magazine most of the time. This issue has a striking cover in B&W. Has some really nice images including a Cindy Crawford set shot by Mikael Jansson. Thers's a set called Physical shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott which is striking, and contains a lot more nudity than you'll see in USA magazines. I guess my fav image in this issue is the Calvin Kline jeans ad... jeans and tease. Hellava combo... Take a look.

Consumer's Reports annual electronics issue. Smart buys in digital cameras... problem is they stop at about $1000. Anyway, good stuff on buying HDTV sets.

Shutterbug, October. Pro lighting tips and techniques. Studio flash survey. Worth a browse if you looking for new studio lighting and accessories. There's a new gadget on page 50, something called a LiteShaper. Haven't figured it out exactly, but supposedly fits on any standard softbox. Truck over to Liteshaper.com and check it out. How come I haven't seen anybody posting Lensbabies shots here? I heard a few guys were getting them...

New high price leader, magazine called Eyewitness. Cover price at $32.00 and from my very quick glance may be somehow related to Spanish countries. After I saw the price, I put it back VERY quickly. My newsstand budget is already hurtin'...

Stuff (USA), October. A promo freebie mini-magazine with some of their best cover shots is included with this issue. Some nice stuff, and still a deal at $5.00. Anyway, I told you how I like these promos last time around. Lessee, the calander promos ought to be coming out soon. Check them out, especially Italian MAX if you can find it... cool stuff.

As I warned you, the Kate Moss i-D and Maxim swimsuit DVD issues are gone... Next time pay attention!

Black and White, Australian, Kinda pricey ($15.00) magazine with lots of nude features. The latest has some nice stuff, but at least for me, no WOW! Still in all, if you are into nudity, you oughta look at it when it's on the stands. Which brings me to another topic...

Sealed magazines. More and more magazines are coming packaged up, and you can't really browse them. Used to be it was just some of the more outrageous porn stuff, then when they got antsy about nudity on covers a bunch more got "packaged". Now the newstands are packinging the higher dollar stuff like Italian Vogue, etc. Pretty soon, newsstand browsing will be a thing of the past...

I say put at least one issue of the non-porn stuff out without packaging. You can't tell a book by it's cover and all that... If it's got a freebie that can "walk off", put the freebie behind the counter or something. But browsers unite... a time honored tradition is being destroyed... 'nuff said.

Dang, I almost forgot. A true fashion icon and world reknown celebrity appears in POP decked out in Louis Vuitton garb... the incredibly sexy Miss Piggy... Kermit's also there... Worth the price alone!

Anyway, here's the disclaimer. I get nothing for mentioning the magazines I do. I don't own a newsstand or distributorship, or anything. My opinions are strictly mine. Your mileage may vary. Professional reader on a closed course. Seat belts are recommended.

I personally was not impressed with the insert. It seemed to be more of lok at who we shot not so much visual impact. dont get me wrong nice photos but there are much more visually apealing images between the covers.

just my 2 cents worth

In my earlier comments, I said the Stuff freebie was nice...

You don't happen to agree. That's okay...

For those curious about the LiteShaper thing... here's an easy click

LiteShaper web page

I am having a bit of a problem with this device. It seems to be useful for eliminating exactly what I want a big softbox to do. But to each his own...
Haven't seen a price on it yet.

Did see something advertised in a British magazine recently, and darned if I can find it again. It's a right angle viewer for the eyepiece of a camera. Just the thing for those floor angle shots. Wait a sec... this was not your typical optical gizmotchy which causes the image to be reversed. This was electronic as I recall, and had a very odd name, something like Wazzle or similar. Anybody remember seeing it? Twas a tiny little ad somewhere...

IT NEVER FAILS!!!
As soon as I post, I'll find the answer to my question. Well, at least this time I got back in under the Edit timelimit. That right angle viewer is a Zigview... real close to Wazzle, huh? Never said I was perfect...

Anyway if you have the September issue of Digital Camera World, check the top of page 108. Yeah, I know it's a full page ad and there's no page number... Whatta you gonna do... I think this gadget is cool and at 119 pounds, lessee thats about $160 if I recall, it might be pretty nice to have. I'm off to do a Google on Zigview...
