Last weekend I scheduled a shoot with a model. The day before the scheduled shoot, the model e-mails me to cancel the shoot becasue she has a dance class (the appointment was made a week ago and at that time she said it was OK with her schedule). OK .. fine, I had a relaxed weekend. About 6 days ago, scheduled another shoot with a different model for coming Saturday and today the model e-mails me to cancel it (family matters - she says).

The problem is that almost every time I schedule a shoot for a weekend I forfeit a possible newspaper assignment (which is a paid job). So, I am thinking if its worth it to schedule anymore TFP shoots with "busy" models because after next couple of weeks it is going to be cold outside (I do outdoor stuff only) and also I keep on losing time/money by cancelled appointments at the last moment.

I think I should try be a photo-journalist although I prefer to be a glamour/casual phtographer. Am I over-reacting???

Dont give up just yet..but prioritize your needs..if you need the paid gigs put the glam stuff on the back burner...I know your frustration with models, had alot of it myself as of late, had said to myself several times, that Im just not going to deal with them anymore. who knows I might say that again soon!

You don't have to move on,,, just don't starve for your art either.
take care of your business first, then work on the art.

I would make my money first and do my art after that.

I do not have a lot of models wanting to shoot with me and therefore I do a lot of nature shots as well as landscape shots. Some of my outdoor shots have won in contest and so its all good.

Keep trying. Just prioritize like Don said. I often have models contact me to shoot them on a Saturday or Sunday. "Well, I am a wedding and portrait photographer," I tell them. "So if you would like for me to schedule a shoot with you for a Saturday, my rates are $XXX. I don't shoot on Sundays. I need a day off too you know." That usually puts them in a mindset that I want. If I'm going to shoot with this guy, it has to be on his terms. It's also a good way to weed out flakes.

Just my two cents. I am by no way an authority, but it's working for me.

Dan,

Welcome to the club of no show, irrresponsible, ungreatfull models. (not all of them so as not to offend anyone). I broke down and scheduled a model tfp for 10 am this morning. I told her I dont shoot tfp and she begged me...guess why im on the forum right this moment?? At least yours sent emails...mine just didnt show up. Worth it to shoot tfp? Usually not.

Thanks all for encouraging words!

Here is what I am going to do. Effective immediately, I am no longer doing TFP. Paid ONLY. Wasting time for nothing is the worst thing.
