just for fun shoot with another friend of mine. again this is something new to me. i used a half done home made beauty dish (about 18" diameter white reflector, without the piece to block direct flash) and i like the results. the upload to flickr killed the quality a bit and seemed to wash it out. but im still showing it because i love all he feedback ive been getting here!

am i improving?

I would be tempted to throw some background light to kill or lessen the big shadow on the background, which to me, is very distracting for this type of image.

Nice go at it...Keep at it...From what I've seen of yours, not like I'm any kind of authority, but I'd say you're improving, you betcha.

I think this image has a lot going for it man, but like Jon said about the shadow, I'd find a way to lessen it, but my first thought was to just move away from the background some more. And it might be my tired eyes, but her eyes kinda seem a tad soft. I dunno, though, at this time of night everything I look at is blurry.

And yep, from what I've seen I think you're improving too, most definitely! Keep it up!

Sam

#1, the model is really close to the wall, so you couldn't light the background without throwing light on her.

#2, the shadow isn't all that bad.

#3, it's the position of your main that you need to change. i find it odd that a lot of people aim their lights straight-on to their subject. it makes your lighting super flat, no modeling, and thus no contrast. this is what's causing the shadow right behind your model. raise the head so that it's at least 2 feet above and in front of the model. the shadow will disappear below frame, and you'll get a much nicer, more natural look to your lighting.

wow. she looks like the chic in "the matrix."

lately, i've been playing around with coming in from low with the light and kinda liking the results. yeah, it looks something less than natural, but i think it has an interesting appeal.
