A while ago there was a thread about a video tape collection put out by the NY Institute of Photography called "The Art of Glamour Photography". I thought it sounded neato so I did some ebay searches. Nada. So I set up a search that would email me if it popped up. Well I finally won an auction for the 4 tapes at a reasonable price and they arrived yesterday. After I opened the package and saw the great condition of the VHS box set it hit me. I no longer own a VCR! Doh! Tivo and DVDs have made vcrs pretty obsolete, but until several months ago, I've always had one for as long as I can remember watching TV. So now I guess I either have to find a place that will transfer them to DVD or go to a thrift store and find a VCR.

Join the club James!

I found a box of VHS tapes and my sons wanted to watch the Star Wars tapes. I got rid of my VCR about 8 months prior and completely forgot about not having one. We made popcorn, sat down and realized that we had no VCR. I ran to the electronics department of a local store. The VCRs were more costly that the DVD players. HOWEVER, they had refurbed ones for $14!!

Your local Wal-Mart has VCR's for as little as $30 or $40. I keep one around, hooked up and working, just for that eventuality.

So I went to a place that does video transfers. No dice. They won't convert it to DVD because it's copyrighted! They only convert home movies and the like. Now it seems to me that converting the media something's on is fair use, you're within your rights to make a tape of a CD for example, but I guess they're just covering their butts. To the thrift store I suppose (where a vcr should be about $15).

Go out and pick up one of the VCR -> DVD recorders. If you have old family VHS tapes, it will pay for itself in savings. Pop the tape and a blank DVD in and it does all the work. Many even have mini plugs for your digital videocamera. I think they start around $249 now and will probably go down.
