One of Mike's setups. Some of you have been asking me to post some setups and behing the scenes images. Well, here's the first of those.

These images were shot for the models' books. I'm shooting outdoors at high noon.

Here's the tech specs:
Canon 20D
Canon 70-200 2.8L ISM at 78mm
1/200 f8
Custom WB set using a digital calibration target
AB 1600 at 2/3 power about 15 feet from the model. I'm about 30 feet from the model.

That's it, no fill, reflector, or other gadgets. BTW, it was a bright sunny day when I was shooting this. All images are straight out of camera. No curves or anything have been done. Of course I will do that tweak before sending them to print, but I don't think it'll need much

Mike

Very cool Mike... Nice work. One small thing and it may just be me but on the image of just the model in Blue look at her right side right by her arm below the elbow. The way the shadow falls there it looks like she has more of a belly then she does. Do you see what I am talking about or do I need new glasses. Same image her right knee looks locked and a bit unattractive. Can a knee be attractive? I dont know...Anyway, those are small things to me and I think they all look great.

Why would you put the girls in those dresses, in that setting? To me, they look like a couple of strippers who are hitching to work. If you're going to do the cliché of high-glamour outdoors, you have to take it all the way and make sure your environment is in sync - or in severe contrast to - the models and their styling, which has to be perfect. The first problem, and I realize you may be limited by what they have, is the dresses themselves. I could see long black evening gowns with diamonds in a pine forest or a flat dry lake bed, or a desert or a beach, or even a junkyard, but there is nothing particularly photogenic about this location. Second, again, to pull off this cliché, you need really good makeup, styling, and models with the right poise, which I don't think you have here. They just don't sell me on anything. Third, I wouldn't put these two in a shot together because of their difference in size, as well as skin tone - one is very pale, one is very dark. This incongruous look can work, but not here because the "balance" is off in all sorts of ways, amoung them having one model look into the camera, while the other is looking out for their ride.

BTW, I don't mean to be mean, you're the guy who shot one of my all-time favorite shots on GG, that stunning headshot of Leticia. I still think it looks like a jewerly ad from Vogue.

Mike, I think you do great work, but these really don't do anything for me. Sorry man.

However, I appreciate you posting your setup. It's always helpful for to see this kind of thing.

I always admire someone who keeps their promises, I wish I could get far enough back to use my 70-200L IS in my Studio, well I can use it at 70mm, but not much more and I have a hard time even using my 85mm 1.2 unless I'm wanting to tread in "Moyle territories".

No sock. Straight dish. The sock diffuses a little bit and I was looking for something a little more on the harsh side.

Models are:

Brown hair and blue dress: Wendi Meece
Blonde hair pink dress: Kristina Ray.

As far as the main image on my port goes. I'll have to get back to you on that. Way too many details to remember. I will thought, I promise.
