Somebody please help! I've read several threads that talk about the "Rules" of photography. I've seen things like the rule of 1/3s and cropping ettiquette, so now I ask you... Where do I find a listing of these rules? I'm sure I'll eventually learn how to break the rules, because I'm good at that, but I need to know what the rules are in the first place. Anyone? Anyone?

I don't know of a current book literally listing them as "rules" - although they will be incorporated as a guide to "composition" or "good picture taking" or some such in just about every introductory book on photography aimed at the general public.

As I recall, you can find actual listings in some of the Kodak books from the late 50's and 60's. You might want to check out the holdings of your local public library for some such books. I just did a search on google for "Kodak taking picutres guides" [note typo - it was an accident] and the first hit was "BetterPhoto.com" which offers Top 10 Techniques for Better Pictures

They're all true and effective - but certainly not inviolate, unlike the laws of science. Strong images don't HAVE to break the rules, although some do.

Sorry I couldn't easily find a real list.

just remember, rules is like badges.... and we don't no stinking badges.

Actually just about any intro to photography book should have most of them in it. I know my PJ book from college had like 50 pages just on framing and composition on all kinds of shots from war zones to ad shots to feature art.
For me, and I'm hardely an accomplished pro, though i did win a pretty nifty award once, I think there are three that I try to always consider regardless the shot.
Try not to center the shot on the main subject.
Try not to amputate
And make sure nothing is growing out of odd parts of the body.
I'm sure there are others, but my tiny little mind only has so much room and I always have to keep important things like my home address, where my car keys are and don't run with scissors toward the front.

My mom says I take good pictures Does that count? I figure this rule is a little subjective, but what isn't, eh? I mostly want to take pictures that get a "you're off to a good start response" rather than a "sell your camera now" response, or even no response at all. I hate the silence
