I was having my afternoon library quiet time session today with a glamour magazine as I thumbed thru every image I realized 90% of them broke every rule, I've come to learn about Glamour and composition.....weird crops, missing fingers, toes, revealing shins with no feet....rules of the third shot out the window...but you know what...these images where still incredible and PUBLISHED!!! So I grabbed the copy of Elle out of the basket...and sure enuff same thing...with incredible Images.....so here is my conclusion...and Robert Sanders,JT,Marc Grant,Andy Pearlman,Christian Behr, Rolando Gomez and so and so on. Tell me if Im wrong..... the rules are the basis for creating images with good composition...now breaking the rules and creating INCREDIBLE images...is where TALENT and SKILL make a Published Photographer!! or a good one even better. so the next time you look at an Image and think WOW....but then notice its missing a finger or a toe....your first thought was still WOW!!!!!
I think I'll stick with the Wow!!! Just my obersvation during my quiet time!
So..if you always stay within every rule dont your images become quite static after awhile??

that is it... The rules are there to teach us...then it is up to us to break them and really create something great. But you have to know the rules before you can know how to break them.

Don:

It's easy to look at a beginners photos and when they ask, what can I do to improve, the "rules" give some guidance about common things. Like the rule of thirds....yeah, yeah, yeah, when a newbie shoots the girl dead center, it's easy to re-crop and show how it "improves" the image.

When a guy cuts a girl off at the knees, it's easy to demonstrate how a crop a bit higher up, just plain old looks better.

But once you "get" the rules, they are all about finding a "pleasing" balance.

Therefore, if you can shoot a photo that breaks the rules, the rule gives way to the number one rule which is if it looks good all the other rules don't count.

Like shooting up a girls nose generally never looks flattering....but, if a girl is laughing and has her head thrown back, the emotion of the moment captured, overides the "I can see up your nose" rule.

I see images in publications that break da rules everyday, but the one common denominator in them all, is they are good images regardless.

I hate the "rules"... they should be called suggestions.

The concepts ( thirds, cutting off limbs) are things that every photographer should know and use. But their use should be limited to trying to figure out why an image works or doesn't. When you look through the viewfinder you should let your emotion or "feel" take control. If it doesn't "feel" right when you see it in the camera then it doesn't matter what the rules say... it isn't there.

You also have to take into account that some things are more attractive to the brain then others... i.e. if you have 2 circles ( eyes) looking straight at you, then missing toes may not be important, but if the eyes are looking away then the missing toes become a problem.

Some colours or textures evoke a stronger feeling and emotion then the placement of the model in the image.

Once you learn all the "rules" and they become second nature to you, then you can start to figure out what works for you..which ones can be ignored because something else portrays the emotion or feel you are after.

in short with the rules, learn them, use them, ignore them and move on.

The photographer shot an image, but an EDITOR cropped it for publication. So the image COULD have followed all the "rules" but the editor said "Yeah, but I have to fit it HERE." I've seen editors do strange things to my images - but an editor friend of mine pointed out that the image was good enough to get the editor's attention and the desire to use it, even if they had to mangle it to do it.
