Here's my confusion.....Whats the difference between "Soft lighting" and FLAT?
The difference between a Highlight and a hot spot??? When is Soft lighting appropriate to use???
I see some images that I think the highlights on the shoulders, breasts, curves thighs and muscles give the image more depth...when exactly do those high lights turn into hotspots???

just a few questions from the coocoos nest!!

Dear Sir, Thank You so much for asking these questions. I myself have wondered where the tide turns and creativity becomes a bumbling error. Sorry I have nothing to post, but I wanted to say that I'll be watching this post now and hoping for replies. I wished there was an obvious numerical number that I could watch for in a histogram that says "I'm an idiot!" <heh> BTW, I really have admired you and your Misses photo's and creative style.

First of all I am answering this on about 12 hours sleep in the last 96 hours...and 5 of them were spent sitting on a plane waiting to take off....I still can't figure out how the luggage could not catch up to a plane docked forever...

The difference between soft light and flat light?

Flat light is even light casted on the subject.

Soft light is light that is scattered and not directional. Umbrella light source would be directional and will create harder shadows while a soft box would create softer shadows, if you will.

The difference between a highlight and a hot spot?

A hot spot is an overexposed area while a highlight has detail. A properly exposed rim light is a highlight while an over exposed rim light or spill would be a hot spot. A hot spot could also be called a specular highlight.

When is Soft lighting appropriate to use?

It can almost always be appropriate to use. Soft lighting is ideal for situations involving street make up and reducing facial flaws...

Soft lighting,= light with soft-edged shadows.
Flat lighting,= light with no shadows and minimal contrast.
Highlight,= light slightly brighter than a key light but less than a hot spot.
can add specularity to an object or image and will still hold
detail.
Hotspot,= A highlight w/o image detail but with "bloom" properties.

When is soft lighting appropriate to use? Anytime it transmit the message
and feel you want the image to have.
