This article came out in today's Photo District News Online, you can read it for free here. Anyone who is serious about photography as a profession or even part-timer, should register their images with the copyright office. (Not to mention, getting a subscription to PDN) http://tinyurl.com/87wz5

Huh, while the link didn't work, I did not know it was required to register an image with the copyright office. Now, I am not saying in any way that it's a bad idea, it'll probabbly save some headaches in some instances, but I always worked under the guise that once it's captured, it's copyrighted. Anyhoot, let me know if you get the link fixed, I'd like to read the article.

Yes, you have the copyright as soon as you click the shutter, but registration gives you added protections you don't get if you don;t register. For example, without registration, you don't get attorney's fees, and you don't get statutory damages. They can be up to $150,000, and you don't have to prove the value of the shot, only that the person infringed you. If you don't register before infringement, you still have to register them in order to file the case (in federal court only) and if you win, all you will get are actual damages, which might no be enough to pay your lawyer. Here's a little light reading on copyright protection. http://www.editorialphoto.com/copyright/

I think you have to be a subscriber to access that link... I checked the site and everytime I unknowingly clicked on a subscriber-accessed link it would would say "server not found".
