I feel that unless a photographer either likes your work, or thinks you are a good or better photographer than he is, he will not value your comments on his work unless it's all praise.

can't agree. altho sometimes it might seem that way. its certainlynot that way amongst everyone i've observed... but certainly amongst a few.

howz that for disagreeing while, at the same time, agreeing with you?

Everyone needs to understand it's talking shop. Yes, anyone should be able to critique. However, it seems or can be assumed that those critiques are personal attacks.

I hate the rule that everyone has to post an image just to critique.

I've often wondered why this rule even exists. If I am critiquing another photographers work what does my image have to do with anything? It seems rather stupid to me.

if your critique focuses on the technical aspects of an image it is sometimes helpful for the person being critiqued to gauge your level of expertise in order to place a a level of value on that technical critique.

if you're critique focuses on the aesthetic aspects of an image then i agree about it being stupid for you to provide an image. IMO, with aesthetic critiques (which are purely subjective) everyone's opinion is as valuable and worthy as anyone's opinion.

I didn't mention names because I didn't want to drag other people into this. I tried to find the post so I could send both to you privately, but for the life of me can't find the one posted by the newb. Maybe it wasn't by who I thought it was or maybe it was pulled for some reason. I've tried searching for it a couple of different way. I did find the post by the seasoned pro, but didn't link it because without the original it looses it's impact.

If it's the same one I'm thinking of it was delted by the Mods because the model was a minor.

Here's the weakness in your thought process. Does it mean that if someone has more time and experience at something that they are prevented from just maybe not liking the image you posted? Is there a requirement that 'a seasoned pro' whatever phrase we want to use cannot just simply not like your image and therefore they do not want to comment? Now, putting the shoes on my other feet (which can be uncomfortable), it takes a great deal of effort to keep up with the replies etc to whatever any of us may post. Or to take the time to comment on every image posted. Does it 'always' mean that when we fail to reply to someone it is an intentiaonal slight? My point in this, and I am saying this because you friggin have got the passion, 'they are just WORDS!' Can they hurt? You betcha. Can silence hurt? You betcha? Can you change what others do? Well maybe. Keep doin', keep getting better and one day others will say 'Man, that image works for me!' and 16 minutes later someone else will say ' I don't like it man you shoulda done this,,,,,,,' and such is life in this helter skelter little place we call home.

Work the passion dude, words are secondary.

GREAT topic!

I just took on an intern this past summer. When My partner and I interviewed her, we told her, if you are going to work here, you won't be getting coffee, you won't be filing, you will be a designer. You will work on projects with the both of us, if you don't like something we have designed and are presenting to a client, it is your responsibility to question it, and tell us what you would do differently, and present an example of what you mean. Kissing up to us is a disservice to this company and the client. She participated in a logo re-design for a major client of ours, and had one of her designs in the final presentation of concepts to the client. She tells me when I do a good job, she tells me when I can do better, and gives me reasons why.

She is now our junior partner. Kissing up never helped anyone. If somone's ego is too big to take a comment, make a note, ignore that person next time, and move on.

Now, I realize some things are a matter of opinion, but If you ever lie to me and tell me I did a good job when I haven't, you are not helping and are just taking up space.

Sure, anyone can critique anyone's work--if you post it here on this forum, it's open for critique--like it or not, whether you request it or not.

I value critiques from all levels as in my book, even beginners can be professionals. I will "look" at who is critiquing me, that doesn't mean I don't take their word to heart, it just means I always consider the creds of who critiques my work and how it applies to the purpose of my shoot.

I also believe in "constructive not destructive" critiques though many photographers that like to critique often are quick to think they are being stalked or slammed when their own images are critiqued, I find that a hypocritical attitude and when I see that type of action here, expect me to make serious critiques, thanks, rg sends!
