These look pretty cool Don! I get Photopro every once in a while, but I haven't seen it lately, so I dunno which image you were inspired by, but I like what you got goin' on here.

Was the shot you saw completely detail-less in the front? If so you'd just want to use the backlight only, but as they are I like the last two you posted best, and believe it or not, I actually like the use of diffuse glow on the last one. The composition works well to me best on the last ones.

Hmm, I'm not sure what else to say about 'em, but it's cool that you guys are experimenting. I'm still getting my basics outta the way!

are you saying you didn't have any sort of light source coming from the front? i.e., her face is only lit from ambient created by the strobe firing from the rear?

if that's the case, you need to do some flagging to keep the spill from ruining your hoped-for silhouette effect.

no, no, no. you don't quit for a while. if you feel there's something blocking you from being creative, i.e., making images that are uniquely creative and such, then simply keep shooting but work on the basics. it's like taking batting practice or going to the driving range. you're not trying to do trick ****t, but just trying to get your basic swing happening.

Nope...Im saying thats what I tried and I didnt like it....the image from photopro mag..had just enuff light on in front you could see facial details...when i shot it...I shot without a front light and had no facial detail..I had the backlight figured out..but for the live of me couldnt get any facial detail....so I just went with a light in front...and suck Eff it!

armed with his light meter and upon effective use of a small piece (maybe 12"x12") of white foamcore carefully set in front of the model's face (to bounce back just the right amount of that backlight) and thru a trial-n-error process called bracketing, the fledgeling photographer was able to duplicate the effect he so admired in the pages of his magzine.
