nice work, dude. you're "playing" with the light in an effective way. too bad you couldn't get her a little further from the BG, but i know you're in tight quarters. she can be my friend anytime she wants.

JimmyD, you mention the BG to Model distance. My indoor shooting area is limited right now as well until I can find another studio space to a room in my house or make-shift garage area or when I'm shooting at a clients house. Do you have any tips on lighting/set up to get that separation between the BG and Model to make the face/model pop?

well, it's about DOF. if you want to throw the BG out of focus you're going to need to reduce the DOF. if you have limited space and you can't get the model too far out in front of the BG, you're going to have to reduce the DOF even more. and if you're using a zoom lens, it's going to be even more difficult to throw the BG out of focus (with a model fairly close to it) as zoom lenses (as opposed to primes) are more difficult to reduce the DOF with because of how they focus with multiple elements.

Which is where I come in with a stupid question...if you are shooting in the studio say 1/125th shutterspeed...Im assuming I have to lower lighting to say 5.6 and under...to get the DOF of a lower aperture?????

I'll try that too, to cut down the power on the lights and maybe put a filter over the lights to reduce the DOF.

Adam, on your shot of Crystal Marie, are you using just one light from the left and a fill card on the right?
