Just posting to show off my homemade softbox ::begin laughter now:: i was just messing around and took a cardboard box secured to a 500 watt halogen home depot head. lined the inside with foil and then draped a shirt over the opening. (VERY rigged as you can see in the pic.) but hey, i liked the results.

model is krista, a friend of mine who was just hanging out so we snapped a few. i also shot a roll of b&w film for class so we'll see how that works out. oh and sadly enough (and obvious) MUA is me. she never wears makeup so I did it for her.

feedback appreciated!

This reminds me of my P52 space modulator

I think it's great that you improvised and created a nice light source but be careful about a fire hazard with the cardboard with hot lights. Even a 500 watt light will eventually catch that cardboard on fire.....if you continue to use it put a fan and create some ventilation.

Again, I think this is great whenever we make home made stuff and make it work.....

JT's right. Keep a fire extinguisher close at hand. The resulting light is not bad!

Nice job Tim.. I was going to do the same the other day I was messing around. I just got my speedlite in thurs night and a couple optical slaves for a couple old timer flashes I have lying around. Now I'm off to home depot to get some PVC pipes to make a srcim/reflector. I'll look around the house to find a box I can make a soft box out of too.

By the way.. if you want to check out some lighting tips, check out these videos online. I think I found this site on the boards here at GG and save it to my favorites.

Just paint that baby black, and you got yourself some professional equipment!

In addition to JT's comments, I'd put some holes(maybe 1/2" dia.) in the top of cardboard. Since you have it wrapped inside, it won't leak light, but'll give better heat dispensation, having the the alluminum in direct contact with the air.

Its not a matter of if a fire will start its when, and let me tell you from experience, its when you are in the other room looking at pictures or not paying attention. Fans or not, will not cool that cardboard off enough...

I have shot Home Depots for years, there are much safer and better alternatives then what you came up with as far as diffusing the light. I am telling you from experience. Its just not worth the risk.

This is a fire about to happen. The heat off those lights can easily spontaneously combust everything you have put around them STOP! STOP!
