I know this is old news, but I just had to vent a bit about Contax halting production of their excellent cameras. Why does this always happen?? Every time I start liking something, they cancel it. Every time I had ever started getting into a comic book series, they cancel it. Every time I ever started liking a TV show, they cancel it. Now when I start really getting into and wanting to invest more into a camera system (the 645), they stop friggin' makin' 'em!

Well... always one to find a silver lining (yeah right), maybe I'll be able to find some good deals on Contax cameras and stuff. Still, it'd be nice to know that they'd be around for a while.

Only thing that could make this any worse is if Ilford and Kodak quit making HP5 and Tri-X.

The photog with the hasselblad post should read this one. Another greatly overpriced piece of photographic equipment.

Well if you think about it, it's not so much, in the grand scheme of things. A lot of top-of-the-line equipment will go for more than this (the Hassie comes to mind). The Contax 645 kit (body, 80mm lens, finder, film back) was only about $4000. You can pay twice that much for a Canon IDS Mark II, body only. This is just my opinion, but I still think the Contax 645 (particularly the lenses) is (was ) the best 6x4.5cm format blend of quality and price.

compare apples to apples. One is a film system the other digital. Huge difference just when you think about what happens to the overhead of a studio by going digital.
I still think that as far as bang for your dollar, mamiya is the system to go with.

Okay, you got me there dude, as far as comparing apples to apples (or lack thereof). And as far as the Contax goes, well, like I said, just an opinion. Mamiya makes a fine camera, too.

Kodak is ending production of digital SLR's. Very popular in England but never was a hit with pros here. 14MP with Cannon or Nikon mounts but a lot of money.

A lot has changed in the past 5 years for us film photographers. Anyone wnat a Bronica ERTSi?

You givin' it away? I had never seen or used one of the Kodak digital SLRs, but I had heard good things about it.

Yep, film products and research into new said products seem to be dwindling at an alarming rate. But the thing about Kyocera is that they're halting production of all the Contax line, film and digital. Granted, their digital is only point-and-shoot stuff, as far as I'm aware, but still. They're focusing on their cell phones now.

I have 3 ETRSi bodies, and lenses that go from 45mm to 250mm it was a bad investment from the get go.

My son was a purchasing agent at Kyocera in San Diego at their cell phone operation. One engineer went with a cheaper vender for a part and it turned out to have a high failure rate. Anyway, they lost market share immediately and my son lost a jop due to the drop in sales!

Contax will be sorely missed. No, I was kidding...after 20 years of service I cannot part with her. -Jim BTW, typo ETRSi!

Kyocera halted production of their camera lines, of which Contax is one. However, Carl Zeiss owns the Contax name. They licensed it to Kyocera. Zeiss has a vested interest in medium format equipment and the Contax name. I would not be suprised if you see Contax resurrected at a future date.
