really getting into life and he was cancelled - I guess that is kind of the way the circle of things go. HP5 and Tri-X can't last forever, it is all a matter of time.

Hate to hear that about your uncle, man. The way I've treated my body in the past I often wonder if my own life will end up being cancelled prematurely (ironically enough, because of "being healthy" -- let's just say too much protein can be a bad thing for your kidneys).

And when that happens, I will mourn something fierce. This grown man (in body, not in spirit ) will cry.

Kyocera halted production of their camera lines, of which Contax is one. However, Carl Zeiss owns the Contax name. They licensed it to Kyocera. Zeiss has a vested interest in medium format equipment and the Contax name. I would not be suprised if you see Contax resurrected at a future date.

REALLY????? I had no idea. That gives me new hope, and brightens my day more than you could possibly know, almost in a creepy sort of way.

Sam, I hate to break it to you, but Contax is a for profit company. They want to get you hooked on some great product, and then discontinue it so you'll have to buy something else of theirs. I don't like that tactic, but, sometimes it's hard to avoid it.

Every time I start liking something, they cancel it. Every time I had ever started getting into a comic book series, they cancel it. Every time I ever started liking a TV show, they cancel it. Now when I start really getting into and wanting to invest more into a camera system (the 645), they stop friggin' makin' 'em!

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't you DARE start liking........um, nevermind. I'm not telling you 'cause then you'll try it and then you'll probably like it and then the company will cancel it or go out of business and I won't be able to get it anymore.

Here's something to think about before buying a no longer made camera.

Once production ends, the supply of repair parts starts to dry up quickly. Yeah, I know, cameras never break if used correctly, but the reality is they do...

So unless you're just buying it to sit on a shelf (i.e., as a collector), a used Contax or any other discontinued camera is an "iffy" situation. You may get years of use out of it or it could turn into a very expensive paper weight... If you have unlimited funds, you might get it repaired but the tab might shock you. Just something to keep in mind...

Well,.... if you look at the specs of those 645 cameras.. they only sync at 1/125th.. that is just not on par with any other system that enables 1/400th,...1/500th ..or heck,...1/250th.. that was a main issue for many photogs who would have been interested in that unit,... (BTW, Mamiya offers leaf shutter lenses)..and most of the people interested in that system were wedding photogs,....and that has gone to mostly digital in recent years....so pretty much no one was buying them.. Kind of hard to keep a company in the black like that..
