This is the same as the second image I posted. I took the tiff file that was converted from the raw. I darkened the shadows a little and brithened the highlights just a little. I think it still needs a bit more contrast though.

How much additional photoshop work would be acceptable to this image?

Thanks again for all of the replies and comments.

I would tell you how great your images are, but I would imagine you are already quite aware of that.

I agree with others she is a very lovely lady and overall it is a nice image. I have no problem with technical aspects of the image as to white balance, color saturation, contrast, lighting and focus. But look at the way she is seated and where she is.

As mentioned already, she needs to be engaged with the environment and she seems to be a little slumped in what looks like the inside of an automobile. But if you look at the image, I see lines of the interior of the car crossing in several directions and her legs and arms are also. To me this adds confusion to the scene. Most image viewers want the eye to lead to the subject and in the case of a model, the best qualities if possible.

Added to this is the bright area on the ground that leads the eye from her face and figure. She seems a little insecure by placing her hands between her legs. With some experience I would hope she would place her legs together and they would go to the side. A tight crop of her head and shoulders would have been my choice with this image.

I have to take an exception with the comment about the definition of a professional model. Whether the viewer would like to sleep with her or not is an insult to all models and serious photographers. I have seen portfolios of 14 year old models and average looking women that are outstanding. They are truly professional for many reasons…none have to do with sex.

These ladies know how to work the camera and their bodies to make magic. Other requirements, a good MUA for the hair and eyes, lips and face, interesting clothing that matches the environment, energy that projects to the camera, moods that look real and proper body posture. To make these all come together is the work of a great photographer to do all the right things (another long list).

I get the most creative work and joy in the studio when I have a truly professional model and I tell her to give me her poses. The good ones go into action and the lights flash, and by the time they recycle she has another look, another pose and another side of her personality. This can go for as long as you have film or memory left or the lights start to scream at you (overheated).

One last rant by me, I think that we as photographers have it harder with digital. Digital images are unforgiving to models. I think minor color or facial flaws show more than film and we as photographers have to be good “darkroom technicians. This means we have to have good computer skills and knowledge of image editing software. This is a lot to ask of most photographers (to be good as a photographers and editor). As an example, look at his image and most others we see and usually you will see a bright spot on the tip of his or her nose if camera flash is used. (And the chin on many) Light in the eyes is important to make them “sparkle, but the nose?

I’m sorry if I offended anyone, but when is that last time you saw a rant from me? I like the overall look of the image and would book the model if nearby, but got upset with the comments in your thread. -Jim

Model Dani...I do not any two images the same from our session.

A pretty girl you might want to hang out with or take to bed, but a model is one that everyone that looks at the picture thinks she wants to go bed with THEM. That special quality is very hard to find, but when you got a model that can project that feeling..its amazing.

That is the best way I've heard it put ever! Thanks for posting that.

Something tells me that he was talking about glamour and eye candy models, not catalogue or spokesmodels. At least that's how I took it.

Hello Jim,

Thank you very kindly for the pointers. I will try to watch for those things the next time I shoot.

How do you generally control the highlights on the nose and chin? I usually end up retouching them out later. In this particular instance it was a hot and humid day so there was some perspiration involved as well that was catching the light unfortunately. When I lit this shoot if memory serves me correctly I was using my Sunpak 120J with a mini-softbox on a light stand. In the environmental shots I usually use the 120J as a bare bulb, but shooting by the car I put the softbox on so I wouldn't get a lot of reflections from the car.

Thanks again for your comments.

everyone is entitled to different opinions. thats why they sell chocolate and vanilla.

First of all, I am referring to glamour modeling. I shoot lifestyle and commercial images far more than glamour. There is never any sexual tension or component in those images.

However, when we do glamour images, if the "sexual" component is not there, in some way shape or form, the images just don't "POP". It could be he sweet girl next door look or smoldering sexuality with a deep sensual edge, but its there, and there (hopefully) in my work and in any of the major magazines. Take a look at Elle, Vogue, Harpers, or any other fashion book, as well as any of the major mens magazines.

If the thought/term/concept of sexual connotation disturbs you or a model, this is a difficult business to be in. I separate actual behavior from the look we are going for in a picture. If there is no sexual component in the glamour image, the image lacks something. In my humble opinion. That doesn't mean that our photo shoots are drunken orgies. It just means that he glamour component probably has some sexy vision.

By the way, I love models, I like women very much, and I try to make it come through in my pics. I am sorry if I offended you, but this is how I approach my shoots.

When I shoot a group of 7 year olds for a stock shoot, or a 17 year old for a senior portrait, I look at the pose much differently. But nobody on GG wants to see that stuff. If you do, go to my commercial website www.glennusdin.com.

Thank you again for expressing your thoughts. The world is a better place when we can discuss and agree to disagree without getting mad at each other.

here is a lifestyle beauty image for stock sale. Pure, clean, wholesome and sweet, NO sex, a gorgeous model and clean make-up:
