I like it! And thanks for posting the behind-the-scenes shots as well. The Mr. Monk in me keeps centering on the cig - it's not lit!

On a more serious note - would a next step here be to mute out the reds a bit? The image quality seems too robust for the era. I've been dabbling with this a bit myself and was told the reds did not saturate as well in older films. Just a thought.

Now she's smoking! No, really. The cig is lit! Where's the smoke, though? I've heard that it is hard to get smoke to show up on film well and that it is often supplemented by dry-ice or something. Ever try that?

Well in that era it would have been Black and White and shot with an 8x10 camera with direct retouching on the negative. I played around with different ways to make it black/white but decided to just present the color version. Yes it would be better with the cig lit. I'm currently playing with faking that in Photoshop. I can't stand to be around lit cigs myself, so couldn't do it for real.

I can't take the cigs myself either. So, that makes sense certainly. I'm anxious to see the results of your continued work in this style.

lit from the front, in fact it will become very reflective the more concentrated it becomes. On that note, you have to be careful not to let it dominate... when shooting someone behind the smoke you have to light it from the side or rear so that it remains translucent. If you light from the front, with too much fill, it will completely dominate and you would have a great shot of smoke - the light hits the smoke, illuminates and bounces right back into camera. Two examples here.
