It's probably a good idea sometime today to reflect on what has happened in the southeastern United States and to remind ourselves that we are a great people in a country with an amazing capacity to deal with these kinds of problems. As Americans, we will be asked to do our part to deal with these unusual circumstances, and as one nation I am confident we will. Those Americans who live in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Southwestern Florida should today take comfort that, as your fellow country men, we will do our very best to rebuild and restore those areas which have been so devastated.
There is a better day coming. Today, for so many people, that fact may be hard to accept, but it is true. If you are in the areas affected by this natural disaster, you are not alone. Your family, the American family, stands with you. If you are not located in those areas, the American Red Cross could probably use a few bucks (while not a huge fan of the Red Cross, they are probably the most effective private organization at least in the early days of this type of natural disaster). If you have a moment and are qualified, give blood. It costs nothing and it will make you feel pretty good. Finally, don't be afraid to remind your representatives that it's okay to ask us to make some sacrifices to aid our fellow Americans. America is a nation with broad shoulders and a strong back, for us any burden, when shared, is a light one.
