I've heard all the reasons....models who aren't really model material, models wasting your time, models who don't show up...blah, blah, blah

Not to be rude, but all the reasons begin to sound the same. So...for the rest of us who still shoot TFP/TFCD, why do you do it? I don't know about the rest of y'all, but I still have fun. Sure, I'm worth getting paid. I get paid well when I charge, but I still enjoy the occasional freebie.

I do it because:
90% of "modeling" has nothing to do with fashion or glamour. Who are all those people in ads?

I get to work with model wannabees who aren't yet jaded.

If I weren't do this, I'd be blowing my money on golf clubs or fishing lures.

I meet interesting women like Raquel....

For me, I do TFP+CD because I'm not yet at the level where I feel comfortable charging for my services. As all of you know, the only way to get better is to keep shooting, experimenting, and learning from your mistakes. On that note, I feel that if you're doing TFP+CD and you DO make some mistakes, the model can't complain too loudly since you did offer your services for free.

Another reason I've done some TFP+CD's in the past was that I was friends with the models, and they hadn't done any sort of modeling before. A good example of this is my friends Karma (yes, that's her real name), and Liz. The knowledge I gained from doing their photographs was more valuable than any money they could have paid me.

Finally, the other reason I do TFP+CD is that it keeps me from dumping more money into my computer, or into my gun collection. I've already upgraded this thing to a tri-radiator water cooled Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (overclocked to 2.7Ghz), w/4GB of RAM, dual 72GB Raptor HD's, and 250GB RAID array. I was actually looking into getting a Gigabyte i-RAM RAMDisk for this too, but I know if I spend another dime on this thing, my girlfriend with castrate me. heheh

Mark

I try and keep my art/commerical and my "fun" separate. I don't post images from paid shoots, I don't (genreally) post much from the art shoots and I don't use clients as models. I do TFP when I want to polish my portfolio or just have fun. It's fun to shoot. It's fun to shoot with people when I'm used to taking pictures of empty benches.... (yeah, that's one of my art projects).

Bob

Doesn't this look like fun???

I guess my own situation is a bit different from most as I'm retired from commercial shooting. I'm not really trying to build a portfolio and at my age and place in my 'career', I'm probably not going to learn a lot more. Yes, I'm worth being paid and have been paid for photography for many years and am still being paid by those wishing private sessions.

I offer two types of sessions. One is a private commission in which the model-client is assured of complete privacy, I never use or show those images in any way. Those are wonderful and the extra money (on a retirement income) is great. But my real love is the second type of session, those who choose to pose in my work as models. These would be called TFP/CD sessions as the only pay the model receives is prints and a CD. These ladies are the raw material for my work. In the work I'm currently doing, I could care less whether or not the lady is an experienced model or even whether she is a 'model' at all, in fact most have never posed before their session with me. These ladies are the raw material which allows me to build a collection of artistic nudes which will hopefully live on beyond me.

For example, this lady and her boyfriend(prop) had never posed before this session.

cuz I'd rather be shooting some model, whether she's got "it" or not, than sitting around... i.e., when i have sitting around time. plus, that's when i get to try things i wouldn't try when it's a paid gig. with paid gigs, the client expects what they expect and they don't expect me to suddenly and significantly deviate from that expectation.

I have to agree with Bob's answer. I use TFP/CD as a way to improve, a way to experiment with little risk, a way to get images for my in-house book and web site that clients can look through to get ideas, and a way to do something different. I don't do as much as I used to but I still find time to shoot TFP/CD with a variety of models and non-models. I think everyone benefits from it. The model gets some great images for their portfolio, I get images for my site and book, and, if there is a MUA involved, they get images they can use too. I get to mess around with ideas I have for lighting -- but I shoot as critically as I would for a paying client.

I shoot TFP/CD at this point in time only to get in someone’s pocket IE: a swimsuit manufacture, or some other product. I will have them send me a few things and shoot them in hopes they will like the work, either the models or mine. If they like it some one gets work out of it….
