i was looking at some of the images of kori rae (at el mirage) that i shot during golden hour, then decided to mess with one of them. the images in this series are, basically, candids-- kori was posing for rick and i was behind her and off to the side admiring (amongst other things) the way the light was playing on her. i took some shots while she had her attention directed towards rick, then between rick's shots, i called to her and she turned.

while looking at this image, which is fairly dramatic with the sun so low in the sky, i wanted to see what it would look like in monochrome. so i channel mixed it to b&w... then, after saving that image, i added a violet photo filter.

i dunno... the monochromes have an otherworldly ethereal feel to them. and the b&w image is almost film noirish.

here they are: from color to b&w to photo filtered. (and for anyone nit-picking, i'm aware the horizon is a little canted.)

#2 looks best to me partly because the funny look to the eyes goes away.

Her look is very natural. We see a lot of "posed" expressions every day. Glad you 3 had a good time. -Jim

Hey Jimmy, I' really liking the second image. How do you about converting your images to B&W?

i know a lot of guys use 3rd party software to convert. i use the channel mixer.

make a layer copy of the background image. go to the channel mixer, apply it and click it for monochrome. i start with making the settings 40 for the red channel and 60 for the green channel and i rarely, if ever, touch the blue channel. i then play with the red and green (up and/or down just in little bits) until i think it looks good. after that, i adjust the blacks, white, and midtones with levels or curves. i sometimes apply a diffusion glow to B&W images.... but just a little and i often end up erasing an awful lot of it off. if i use some unsharp mask its the last thing i do and i don't apply much.

maybe some of the PS whiz guys know a better way?
