Hi everyone. I've been to a couple of Rolando Workshops in Chicago and they have been great! I want to start shooting portraits/glamour in my home. What kind of studio lighting kit do you recommend? I'm just a beginner and not sure if I will ever take pictures of anyone other than friends and family so I'm not going to make any money or very little.

Both B & H Photo Video and Adorama Photo have house brand monolights that will meet your needs. The reviews I have read on both are good. Also in both cases the monolights are made for them by name brand manufacturers. I think the Adorama monolights are made by Elichrom but verify this for yourself.

You can get a kit that has the monolight, a reflector, power cord, synch cord, an umbrella, and a general purpose stand for right at $150.00 per light kit and you will need to buy at least two kits.

If you want to get a name brand light the StudioMax monolights are made by Photogenic. A single StudioMax will cost you around approx. $175.00.

Good luck and be sure to post some of your studio images for us to see.
