There is absolutely no way to prevent an image from being stolen on the internet. The absolute best protection is to copyright it. You can also reduce the images to 100kb or less to make it unusable, you can put a watermark on it, and you can put metadata in the file. The watermark and the metadata can be removed. I have hear this concern over and over. It is a weakness in the internet.
I am on another site where a Janitor found photos on a disc and wanted to put is name on them. Ouch. OK photos on the internet are like "Banging your Head Against the Desk" problem. That was my joke about it but I understand your concern and my joke isn't here to diminish its importance. I hope this helps.

PS Copyrights are inexpensive at $55 in the mail and $35 online for all the photos you want.

I think it is $55/$35 per set of images per year. Here is the link to the US Copyright office (http://www.copyright.gov/forms/). Sorry, I don't have similar links for other countries.

+1 for sirdukes advice. If it's on the internet there is no way to keep it safe. Register your copyright and go after offenders.

It is the "registering" of your work that costs.

Your work is copyrighted the minute you create the image, and there is no charge for that. There are advantages to registering your work, but unless you have the time, energy and money for a lawsuit, the advantages might not be that valuable. It depends if the violator is some 18 year old kid in Podunk, Tx or a multi-million dollar company in NYC.
