Everytime you move light, change your setup, whatever, your exposure will change. You can either take 3+ test shots everytime, or be afraid to change your setup. If you ever want to recreate the setup, it's a crapshoot, because you don't know what you had. The meter is not "necessary', but if mine ever goes out I will go buy another one immediately. I use the Sekonic L-358, and would recommend it to anyone.

FYI: Too many people will tell you, "You don't need a meter, (Insert Big Name Here) doesn't use a meter..." Tell them "(Insert Big Name Here), has been shooting for 20 plus years, and knows exactly what his histogram is telling him!" Big name likey used a meter for decades, before they gave it up.

Today I am also relying on the histogram on my camera. Once I figured it out, I love it. Especially when I am shooting in many different locations and I want the manual control.
