What are the optimal image dimensions, resolution, and file size for portfolio uploads?

My favorite for portfolio "web" uploads is 600 pixels on the longest side at 72 PPI (note: DPI is used to describe dots per inch for printing, though I'd never print at 72DPI). I also use Adobe Photoshop "Save for Web" feature as that feature uses a 216 color palette (cross-platform compatibility) versus 256 color palette, it also discards the thumbnail preview and the EXIF data file, thus a smaller file than a typical jpg (save as vs save for web).

You'll find if you do it this way, your file sizes are normally well below 100K which also makes it hard for anyone to steal your images for publication in print.

That's how I do it, thanks, rg sends!

In "save for web and devices", how do i set the DPI and color palette dimensions? Or are they automatic?
Do you sharpen any differently to "Save for Web and Devices"? I have noticed that some uploads are much sharper than others. While mine are very clean and sharp on my Probook monitor, they seem to be hazy when I upload. Thanks for the help!

Re: Optimal image dimensions, resolution, and file size for portfolio uploads

If you are using Adobe PhotoShop when you open the Save For Web app there is a set of controls to the right of the screen. One control (in CS2 it is called Preset) allows you to specify the type of file that is saved (ie: .gif, .tiff, .jpg, etc) as well as the quality of the image (high, medium, low).

There is also a Blur option which allows you to add some Gaussian Blur to the final image as it is saved.

There are also two boxes below the Preset Control called Progressive and ICC. I believe you would want to select the ICC option.

One thing I do not know is how do you name a file that you have saved in the Save For Web app or does PhotoShop automatically make a copy copy of the original with a .copy extension. Anyone who might know the answer to this please feel free to jump in.
