I'm trying to create a water reflection effect. The source image (which is not Glamour, but could be) is on a black background and occupies the upper half of the picture. I have copied it, flipped it vertically, and pasted it as the bottom half of the picture as a mirror image. To give it a fade perspective, I have used a Transparent to Black gradient on the flipped image. The effect is OK, but the bottom of the reflected image looks a little "muddy". What I'd like is an Opacity Gradient, where the reflected image fades from Opaque to Transparent, not Transparent to Black, but I can't find one. Anyone have any suggestions?

I can't answer your question directly as I have never tried it myself. Perhaps you will find something useful in this alternative technique:

Thanks -

I have that tutorial in my kit, and I have used it before. I just wanted a little more "depth" to the reflection - but on second thought - maybe it's not needed!

Thanks,
Mike

AlienSkin has a filter for just such a thing. They have a full 30 day trial if you want to check it out.

I hope you don't mind, but I tried to mock it up with the AlienSkin filter

Doc,

if I understand you correctly you can get what you want by creating a duplicate layer and using a "mask". Just put a white to black gradient on the mask itself. White shows and black hides so you would start with white in the center of the mask and shift to black at the bottom. Hope this helps.

David -

I think that is exactly what I want to do and I should have thought of it myself! Photoshop has tooooo many ways to do things! I'm also going to use the Distort filter > Lens Correction > Horizontal Perspective to try to make the reflection "lie down" a bit to further emulate a flat surface.

Thanks for all your help,
Doc

I tried the tutorial and found that I need to work on the lines level. I did find that because it's a separate file I could make several files at different setting and try them out on my photo.

I use "Flood" from Flaming Pear to do reflections of all sorts.

Re: Creating a reflection...

You have total control over what the reflective surface is (mercury, water, ocean, mirror, almost anything can be simulated).

Cheers,
rfs
