Oops, sorry running XP pro on Windows, I'm sure MAC users would not have this problem

Ok one more quick question. Are you in 8 or 16 bit? There will be some tools and filters that do not work in 16 bit yet.

My suggestion would also be to check the mode first. However, I had to to a repair install immediately after my full install to get the HDR merge working. I don't blame MS...I blame Adobe.

P4 machine with 1 gig of ram, 256 mg on the video card, program is installed on C: drive, what is happening is that I cannot use healing brush or any other brushes for that matter, cap lock is not on, num lock is on, black is my foreground color and white is my background color, I have checked my machine at work has the same system configuration, works fine there, however I need to do the majority of my photowork at home.

I had this same sort of problem when I upgraded to CS2. all I had to do is reset the preferences, (hold down ctl+alt+shift while it's starting up), and everything worked again.

I just remembered - in CS3 you can reset the prefs for just one tool so you don't have to blow out all your prefs. if it's just one or two tools giving you problems, you might want to try that first. just select the tool, then in the options bar at the top select the little box with the tools icon at the far left end of the options bar, then select the fly-out menu (the little right pointing triangle) and select "reset tool presets" from the list.
