I've been shooting bodybuilding/fitness shows and photoshoots for a couple years now, and there is one look achieved by a certain site that I absolutely LOVE!!!

I can spot pictures taken by this person a mile away. There is always lots of contrast, with SUPER vivid color on say, the posing suits, but the skin is never over saturated, and their is never any blocking of shadows or blowing out of highlights. In fact, the blacks seem to have a "glow to them".

I've asked the photographer, he says he uses a batch action, and I believe him because he can often post over 1000 images taken from a bodybuilding show within 24 hours. The post process shows on indoor photoshoots, outdoor photoshoots, stage pics, and even just snapshots.

I've asked the rest, and from what I've seen this forum seems to have the best.

Here are samples. I will be so grateful to anybody that can help me reverse engineer this probess, ifyou can nail it I would even pay!

Samples:

Simple snapshot:

Here are 700 shots taken and posted from a staged event within 24 hrs (I've seen pics from other photogs at the same show that look like just plain ol snapshots by comparison). The lighting was apparently very bad at this show too...

I have about 10 years of Photoshop experience, and quite a few years of cam experience, and have tried everything from high pass filters to lab techniques, but nothing that comes really close, or works well on all images as an action.

Thans guys!

Links work fine for me. I am using Firefox, not that it should make a difference.

Unfortunately, I am unable to provide an answer to the other person's question.

I am at a far cry from being able to authoritatively tell you how he did what he did, but here is my take on it:

1) Saturation is bumped up

2) The contrast is bumped up

3) He is shooting at a high ISO, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of noise. (there is good sharpness of the image for this type of lighting and staging)

4) The highlights are indeed blown out (no detail in the highlights)

5) His color balance is good, but I have no idea if that is Photoshop or his camera settings.

Lee

I'm very curious how you can get the red sports top (in the first picture) to be SOOO red and saturated, but the skin remains nice and perfectly saturated. Again, this is done with a batch action. How could you do that?!!!

I have been using DXO as my RAW converter for some time now. By using the filmpack, I can get some saturated colors and normal skin tones by using the Provia look. This film look saturates the red tones and also gives more contrast. You could batch process your photos this way, although I tend to apply this filter on an individual basis. You can also download a fully working trial to see if it works for you.

Thanks Coach. I will give that a try!
I assume the Film Pack plugin for PS would work well too by just using the Adobe ACRaw?
I currently use Alienskin's Color Pack and I find the Provia does tend to oversaturate the skin tones on these bodybuilders.
