I recently received an ad from Adobe stating:

"Now that Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom™ 1.0 software is shipping, it's time to retire your beta version."

I regularly use Photoshop CS2/CS3 beta and would like to know how other photographers feel about Lightroom. Are you going to pay the (discounted) $199 to get the program?? I must admit that I have not spent much time with the program, but I would really appreciate your comments.

Thanks,

Tom

Got it and love it. The workflow is so easy. I dumped Bridge a long time ago. Many things I used to do in Photoshop I now do in Lightroom.

One thing I haven't figured out with lightroom is to quickly tell where my blown highlights are. I shoot RAW and use Nikon Capture to tell me where my blown highlights are and can adjust exposure if necessary. Does this functionality exist in lightroom? Is it a true RAW adjustment, or is it just a level adjustment?

I'm buying it, since 1.0 actualy have lots more cool stuff built in, than the beta version did, like the clone tool.
Here is a link where you can watch the videos abouth how the program works.

It does tell you about blown highlights and even more. In the Develop module, there are two small boxes on the upper corners of the histogram. The top left box will tell you when you've lost shadow detail and the upper right will tell tell you when you've lost highlight detail - even as you adjust exposure after the fact. When these boxes are clicked, parts of the image with issues will be highlighted with one color for shadow issues and another color for highlight issues.

Oh, and by the way for those of you who are in school OR have kids in school. The education store of Adobe has lightroom for $99. I just ordered it with my son's transcript as proof and for $99, you can't beat it's features.

There is also a world of difference between the beta and the final as far as speed. The final is MUCH faster and there are some added features. I really like it. I got it free as I had the paid version of Raw Shooter when Adobe bought them out.

Update on another reason Lightroom is interesting, at least for Nikon shooters. Lightroom 1.0 will take care of all your imports from the camera allowing you to dump Capture or Picture Project. Nikon makes great hardware but their software really sucks!

It's a great raw converter -- much much more than just levels. Photoshop CS3 will ship with ACR 4.0 and will have most of the same conversion technology LR has but there's so much more to LR I wouldn't even know where to start.

For the way I work, it's a great tool.

I'm still not quite sure about LR. Luckily I was in the same position of being a RawShooter registered user so I have the V1.0 to play with. I do so infrequently shoot now (work pressures-late nights) that I'm evaluating it over the long run. But the disturbing aspect of this program is that there is much which requires porting the image over to PS to finish (eg. whole scale cloning). I'm not so enamoured with CS2 or CS3 that I'm willing to fork out the cash for a program I'm only buying to finish off a photo. Plus, when you consider that, CS3 & ACR4.0 will handle all that LR can currently do it makes me wonder why people would purchase LR knowing that they *will* have to migrate to other programs. Might as well bite the bullet and purchase CS3 outright when it comes. But I digress...

I wonder if there's anyone out there using LR and Photoshop Elements (3, 4 or 5)? If so I'd like to see if this would be a far less expensive move?

I downloaded beta and decided not to buy. On the plus side, it looks great and the workflow is terrific, it's easy to use and if you were using Bridge before you'll like this better.

On the downside, I had better tools and more of them available in Photoshop Elements. I was using version 2, and my trial of Lightroom was all the impetus I needed to go out and update to the latest version of Elements, which I have been using ever since.

That's just me, most people seem to like Lightroom. I didn't much care for it for other than the positives I mentioned.
