We did this in school and for the life of me I can't remember how we did it. Underexposed background two layers of bringing her up, hair remains underexposed. I think the hair needs to be lightened up.
Any suggestions?

I would make a Curves/Levels Adjustment layer and pull the white and mid point higher then paint her hair in the mask. Only one layer.

I tried that and it seemed to work, but it was not the path we took in school. I think this was easier, thanks.
