Should a crescent be opposite of the catch light or always on the bottom of the eye? I was taught that it should be opposite of the catch light, but I see a lot of fashion shots that shows it at the bottom half of the eye, regardless of catch light location.

it's most likely a fill card.

Wow! I love those lips!

Well, I don't think it's a fill card. The crescents I'm referring to are obvious crescents. The pictures I'm talking about are the ones on the makeup aisles in stores, for example. It's just weird.

Should be obvious, but the top image is not crescented, the bottom image is. In my opinion it helps establish a 3 dimensional effect to the iris. From my understanding, it is possible, but difficult, to achieve the effect using studio lighting.

Occasionally, if you watch people from a profile view in subdued lighting, with a light source on the opposite side, you can see it in action.

Point is, it should be opposite of the catchlight in a real life situation, but in a lot of images I see the effect always at the bottom of the eye.
