I just discovered that a wonderful Local (to me anyway) company called ACD Systems have released ACDSee Pro - which looks like an all in one workflow solution for $130! I'll be downloading the eval tonight playing hard to see if this is all that it appears to be, and would also like to know what others think of it.

If you have already looked at or purchased, please reply with your thoughts. If you haven't, these guys make some AWESOME product (from past experiences) and are likely worth the trial time to see how it works for your workflow.

Your comments are VERY appreciated, as I am still pretty new at all this digital workflow stuff, and some more seasoned pros could offer a true assessment of the product for those of us looking to find an inexpensive solution.

Cheers and thanks for your input!

I've used ACDSee since 2000 or 2001 and registered it almost immediately after I tried it the first time. I was a huge fan. the software was very robust compared to other image managers at any price.

Along about ACDSee 4 a bug got into it that just brought the image browser to its knees on WinXP. It took a long time for them to cop to the problem and fix it. I started reluctantly looking for alternatives... without real success.

I registered 5 and then 6 and still they didn't support Nikon RAW files... which is a big deal for me. I was using CaptureOne DSLR for my RAW file handling and ACDSee for everything else and it was a pain. When Adobe PSCS2 came out with Bridge I committed to using it as my comprehensive image management tool. It's far from perfect but at least I have an integrated solution now.

I never tried ACDSee 7. I have toyed with Picasa which is an innovative program but it's not practical for my purposes. Just the way things worked out. At this point I have well over 30,000 images on my 'live' disk and a whole bunch more on DVD archive disks. It will take something big to make me change again.

No slam on ACDSee. If I was looking for an image manager, ACDSee 7 would top of my list of programs to try out.

been using acdsee since back about version 5, too ...I use it almost exlusviely to sort & categorize, it's fast & good for that. On my gear it doesn't read Nikon RAW files worth a flip, they look faded & reddish, then you open them in CS and they're right on....that's just my expericence, I still use it for jpeg sorting ALL the time.

Workflow-wise right now I'm interested in checking out lightroom, the new adobe software. That, for me at least, sound really interesting.

Best,

Shannon

ACDSee was one of my favorite programs...until they tried to be everything instead of just a damn good browser.

What I want from ACDSee is a image browser only so they can drop the image editing crap and just let me sort, flag my images and browse.

Let the big boys Photoshop and Paintshop do the editing.

Fine if they still want to offer the regular version for general use, but give me a stripped version for speed and pro use.

Still a great program.

my .02 cents.

I use Breeze Browser to sort through batches of photos. You can tag (check/uncheck) and rank (0-5) the images, then sort them accordingly. I even use it to create my simple web galleries; the interface is simple, clean, and highly customizable if you so choose.

They also have a nice downloader interface that I use to create the directory structure I use and rename images to match my filing system.
