I forgot to stamp these images, but I did shoot and edit them. The before image on the right was shot without anything but the camera. No reflectors or anything that I SHOULD of had with me. (it was someone else shoot that didn't use anything and I was simply tagging along) Anyhow, I wanted to show the potential in images that don't look great out of the camera. Of course as a photographer always strive to capture the image as perfect as possible from the start. Playing with Shadow/Highlight Masks in PS-CS versions helped reverse this backlit situation. Questions/Comments are encouraged!

Of course this shot should of had a reflector bouncing light onto the front of the model.

I started by making a copy of the background(BG) Layer and then used Shadow/Highlight to lift everything. The settings are whatever you feel. I usually make them a little strong because after I apply the Shadow/Hightlight, I add a mask to my new layer and then brucs in where I want the shadows to be lifted. This helps tremendously in the face area where I brought out the hair and deep shadows in the face.

I also used the same idea with a Curve Adjustment layer. I pull the white point to the left and made it strong. All I'm looking at is the skin tones. Once I liked where they were I would brush the Curves Layer Masks onver the skin only. Then I did the usual work on the eyes and make-up.

The background was done just as the first paragraph i wrote. Instead of lifting shadow, I pull the Highlights down for the rocks on the ground and sky could be seen. Added a mask and brushed where needed.

The whole process takes maybe 10 minutes.

Nice bit of work, the fixed image is really attractive. I especially like how you were able to pull some detail out of her hair. You shoot RAW or JPEG?

This shot was in JPG. I shoot RAW now, but still tend to jump to JPG. They are both good to me.

....or turn the model around and catch that light reflecting off the gravel.
