Does his face look washed out in this image? Any help to make it better would be nice as well. The client came back and said he looked washed out in this photo.

On my calibrated monitor which is normally a bit darker than others, he does looked washed out except for a patch on his forhead in the upper right part of the picture.

Hi Mike,

Histograms say his face it a bit high but not washed out. His shirt is, however, so it might be an optical illusion due to the brightness of his shirt. Here's my stab at helping.

1. First I added a level layer masked to the red channel. I brought the lower input levels up to 58. I then changed the red channel in the layer box to 0.9 mid level. This altered teh mask to exclude his hair and his ear.

2. Next I added a warming filter layer masked to his face, neck and ears.

3. To help with the optical illusion I am asserting, I added another levels layer setting the midtones to 0.6. I then masked it with the gradient tool to darken the lower part with his shirt only.

You could probably take out the hair hanging down on his forehead for good measure too.

Honestly, you could probably just get by with the gradient masked layer.

Anyways, that's my $0.02. Please forgive reposting your image. I'll take it down as soon as you say.

Greg

No, please don't take it down. It's good teaching. I'm sure others can learn from this as did I. Thanks so much.

Glad I could help. Now, if I could just learn to type correctly, it might make more sense

Is he an actor? Actors should wear the standard black or dark colored top in their headshots... stripes are too distracting anyway... pulls from the face...

I didn't read all the responses, but it's not washed out, it's flat. Actor's wear darker clothing, and a better background or not as lit.
This is washed out, but on purpose.

For other washed out pictures and more.
