photoshopping to remove shadow around subject too close to backdrop

I have been asked to 'clean up' a shot someone else took, non-professional family 'moment' shot. The subject(s) are stading too close to a white wall backdrop, and there is shadow leading edge from flash (as shown in the image snippet).

I have never had to try and photoshop this situation out before. Anyone give me some tips/procedure?

Mike,

I think its really going to matter how the rest of the image looks. If its just this snippet for example, you could easly mask the subject, then use the clone tool to clone over the shadow area. However, if in the full image there are lots of people, objects, and other clutter that would be a masking nightmare, the solution would be entirely different. If you post the full image, I think you will have a much better shot at getting the most effective solution.
