Hey y'all,

Thought you might like to see one of the first halfways decent shots I took for school. Shot yesterday, with my D100 (I shot some on medium format on Velvia too, but I gotta wait 'til tomorrow to get those developed).

Shot with three lights on the gun (one barebulb key light w/cinefoil, one barebulb accent light w/cinefoil & orange gel, and one light w/shoot-through umbrella from the right aimed at the end of the muzzle) and one light on the background. The gun was hanging from a boom arm with fishing line (which was PSed out afterwards).

We had to recreate as closely as possible a photo we liked, so I tried recreating the cover of a gun magazine I had seen. Anyways, please lemme know what you think -- this is for a grade!!!

Sam

It's certain not the normal kind of photo we get here - there's no lingerie! (hmm, now that could make a wicked photo...) It's arguably glamour photography, though

I'd have liked to see a little light on the stock, but maybe that wasn't in the shot you were replicating. The orange gel works well, although there's a little spill onto the pistol grip - is that intended?

Yeah, chicks and guns are always nice. Or did you mean lingerie on the gun itself?

In the pic I was trying to replicate, the light fell off a little bit on the stock, but not as much as how it does here. The colors weren't the same either (the background in the magazine pic was red, and the accent lighting on the gun was green instead of orange here). But we didn't have to do everything just exactly like how it was in the original, but I think more as close as we could get while in keeping true to the style of the original. Or something like that. For instance, the gun they used on the cover I could never get my hands on, unless I was in the army or something.

Oh, and the spill on the grip was NOT intended... I didn't notice it 'til after I was done. I only really wanted the orange light on the clip and heat guard areas. Oh well, maybe next time...

Thanks for the reply!

Sam

The shot looks good to me. Reminded me of when we had to replicate a photo for the portrait class I was in.

I didn't really do a good job on replicating, but I still ended up with a decent shot.

Here is my attempt...

This is my favorite though...

This is one she liked...

It's fun to try and copy a technique to learn new things. Good luck in your class and keep posting some of your assignments. I enjoy them.

Joe

Holy crap, I'm way late replying to this Joe (over a month! ), but just wanted to say thanks. I like your shots too! I agree -- I like the middle one best as well. I've gotten a bunch more work done since that last shot, and I'm gonna try to start posting some of it soon...
