The only things I don't like about my S2 are the slow frame rate and lack of a vertical release.
Other than that, I love it - it's a tall-bodied camera, so there's plenty of room for my club-like hands to hold and shoot it comfortably. Plus, the main controls are right under your fingertips.
The "system" approach is certainly valid, but let's not discount at all one of the things that you mentioned - the feel.
I like to say that shooting a camera is very much like shooting a pistol - if you can't hold it comfortably, you can't shoot it.
