I went with an older Kodak RFS 3570 scanner which handles 35mm and medium format. You can typically find them on eBay at a pretty low cost -- particularly considering they originally went for something in the neighborhood of $15,000. I got mine as a paired lot and gave $850 for them. The downside is that you'll also have to get a specific SCSII card that will add $200 more to your cost and then tinker with it some to get it up and running. But that's the route I took and am pretty happy with the results. Good luck with it.
