Thanks everyone!
All points assimilated.
Given the specifics of what I plan to shoot and how and what kind of space, I've decided that the 50mm f/1.8 is the first lens (other than the one with the camera) I'm getting.
Tight close-up headshots, in small spaces, frequently without the benefit of being able to back off very far. My GG portfolio demonstrates a lot of tight shots of that sort.
IE, the minimum focusing distance of a 300mm is about 7.5 feet. The 50mm is 1.5 feet. This matters right now.
The optics of the Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8 get rave reviews, and the price is unbeatable.
This is certainly not the last lens I'll ever buy, and I understand its limtitations and strong points.
For the type of shots I'll be doing "next", and the distances involved, I'm confident it will provide more than adequately shallow DOF.
And if I'm proven wrong by the final images, I will cheerfully admit it, and shell out more moolah for longer lenses and find bigger spaces.
Thanks again all.
