Well, I don't know if you know this already...but, if you try getting back a little further away,...and shoot ....say like full length...your shallow DOF will look a lot less shallow..
With a cheap zoom like a 75-300 f5.6, you can get better full length shots with less DOF than the 50mm f1.8 wide open..
