After a *LOT* of research and soul searching, I purchased an S2 in early August - and have not regretted my decision.
Common features:
- both based on the Nikon N80
- both can take excellent photographs
- both can take any AF F-mount lens, and most AI / AIS manual lenses (but you lose metering)
In favor of S2:
- The images are sharper out of the camera than with the D100 (however if you always shoot raw and sharpen during post processing there is little difference)
- The colors are more pleasing (to me at least) out of the camera
- ISO100 available (minimum ISO200 on D100)
- PC sync terminal on the camera
- firewire connection capability
- the 12Mp files really do have more resolution than the 6Mp files; if I had to guess maybe 9Mp worth of detail
- eight shot buffer for bursts @ 2FPS (vs. 4 shot at 3FPS on D100)
- TTL flash without needing DX series of flashes
- uses standard AA batteries, I've gotten 900 shots off one set of 1800mAh bats
In favor of the D100:
- officially supported 1/180th flash sync (unofficially works on S2 pro from sync terminal or non-intelligent flashes)
- 1/2 or 1/3rd stop grain exposure compensation (vs. only 1/2 stop on S2)
- available portrait grip
- ISO3200 / ISO6400 available (but noisly, can underexpose -1 and -2 EV on the S2 for similar effect)
The bottom line is that both are excellent cameras, and only you can decide which suits your workflow better. Personally, I am glad I chose the S2.
Best Wishes,
Bill Henning
