Hi Doug,

If memory serves, when I was taking photography courses I heard the exact same thing. I was told back then that if you meter off of a gray card, your exposure would be dead on every time unless you were trying intentionally to under or over-expose the image for effect. However, comma, I've never tried metering a gray card with strobes as I'm not sure it can be done but given that meters are calibrated for 17% gray anyway, I just pop my strobes and get my "average" reading and then use that to shoot or as a reference point to deviate from.
