Jim I believe you can adjust your color balance mode with the Nikon software to auto enhance the color. Also you can use an action to script a major part of your color correction but....no one can predict exactly how you want your color images balanced so you are going to have to make a custom profile.
The very nature of digital is to capture a wide range so the user can edit out what they want and toss the rest.
The latitude has saved me a few times already I would rather keep that than shoot so tight that if I am off a bit I get a bigger problem.
