Most laptop batteries, including the iBook ones, are rated at 300 charge/discharge cycles. So, it you were to run it one day on the charger and then one day off, it'd last about 600 days. Using it plugged in all the time dramatically shortens the life span as does only partially discharging and then recharging the battery.
My guess would be that you need to replace the batteries.
