1st off, try not to buy into this "the camera maker's lenses are the only ones worth buying" nonsense. Look at your needs, then research it.
I too recently made the switch from Nikon-based (Fuji S2) to Canon (EOS 1D). I tried Canon's 70-200 f4 L lens for a week and didn't care for it. So I've switched to Sigma's 70-200 f2.8.
So now I've got all 3rd party lenses:
Quantaray (Tokina) 19-35 f3.5-4.5 - called the Plastic Fantastic on DPReview
Tamron 28-75 f2.8 XR Di - see recent tests by Shutterbug and PopPhoto
Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX APO - considered (by some) to be the equal of Canon's L glass
I would recommend any of these to a serious photographer. But one thing's for sure....you've GOT to cherry pick the lenses from the 3rd party guys to find the best designs. They've each got a coupla primo lenses, and a lot of dreck. YMMV....
