The Ctrl+J (sometimes called jumping the layer) creates a layer of the total image you are working with. No need to lasso anything or have any existing layers before you do it.
Then perform whatever alteration you want; blur, darker, etc. to the top layer (layer 1). The original layer will be named "background", when you open the layers window (F7).
Then go down to the small square with the circle inside, and click to create layer mask. Be sure you make the colors white and black on the color bar.
Using the BRUSH, use black to erase anything on the top layer you want to show through. You can always use the white brush to paint anything back in. You can view only the top layer to see what i sbeing erased or painted back in.
I am not good at explaining when I type, but maybe the attachment will help.
This is a better method than copying a layer and using the eraser tool, because it is too difficult to go back with the history brush to make changes.
