If possible move subject farther away from background, to eliminate shadows and soften it also. Maybe crop closer.
When it is not possible to move the model you might have to use Photoshop to correct it. I have attached an example. As you can see the original had a very distracting background, which was something I had no control over at the time.
I believe the pale blue color of the background does not add to the look.
