The biggest questions you need to ask are...

- Do I need the clean high ISO the new sensor provides?
- Do I have the right focal length lenses to compensate for the 24x36mm sensor?
- Can I deal with the shallower depth of field if I choose to shoot at the same focal length, but get closer to the subject?

I went from the D200 to the D3 and am 100% completely happy with my choice. It's easy for me to see the improvement in my images between the two bodies. Part of that may be more experience, but I think the delta in image quality is easily seen. See more of my images on Pbase

Enjoy either body. From what I've seen of the D300, it's a great machine.
