I believe that a harsh shadow would be one that is extremely dark and high in contrast to other parts of the image, which is what I would have gotten from not using a strobe to offset the sunlight. Not one that is merely a slight shade difference.
If the scrim had been used there wouldn't be any shadows anywhere and probably would have gotten the old, "flat lighting" comment.
