I'll second sticking with the 18-55mm kit lens. That's a 35mm frame equivalent of roughly 28-88mm. Canon has many good quality inexpensive lenses. I used a 28 - 105 and a 75 - 300 for 10 years (on 35mm film camera bodies).

For now, stay within your budget and learn to use the DSLR. The more expensive glass will be there when you decide it's worth the investment.
