The black background is the result of stopping down. The llights were actually bulbs surrounding the mirror. As for the bottle, I think it is being reflected in the mirror but the angle presents it being seen in the foreground.
My memory says that this was the same mirror as for the posted shot:

So I just zoomed in more so only the mirror showed in the original shot and stopped down to force the background in mirror to black.
I suspect it would be better in my original shot to get rid of the bottle, however.
